You probably learned about this project from our Project Introductory Video. It's entitled
" Do You Remember When Idaho Helped Save The World "
( It's on this site's home page)
The idea for this project originated a little over one year ago. I was sitting in a dentist chair talking with the Dental Hygienist when she mentioned how she wanted to help the thousands of regional children who needed dental work but were unable to obtain even simple care due to expenses. No matter what many might claim there is a real poverty problem in many lives due to out of control medical expenses.
She asked if I knew anyone who knew how to create an organization to act on behalf of such children. In this case I did have some valuable experience.
I understood how to create new and innovative methods for acheiving a particular goal. In this case basic dental care on a humanitarian basis. Not for some other country but, for our own citizenry in need.
I asked if there was any other need. She said the same children usually needed optical care as well. I heard these same two statements from grade school teachers.
I had recently visited the Farragut Naval Station Museum and Memorial for the first time and realized there was a natural opportunity for those subject areas regarding her desire for specific humanitarian aid. Usually, municipalities and even state level organizations shy away from seemingly "black hole" philanthropy due to expense in todays uncertain world economy.
I had my own desire to make some improvements to the education systems because of the challenges I saw a long time teacher face, with the slow devolvement of our education system, due to many political factors that should not exist in a quality teaching environment. Billions of dollars are expended annually around the world by generous professionals. The need though is still great. Especially in this country.
About ten years ago, I lost a legal battle due to a serious lack of historical education by jurors deciding a case. Due to that result, I am quite focused on new generations knowing and understanding our country's history. I understand, from first hand experience, what it feels like to lose one's freedom, due to the lack of historical education in others.
As life would have it, I am also facing older age and medical challenges which required me to re-learn new, healthier ways of eating. A problem facing everyone these days.
These four social problems churned about in my mind until I saw what I think is a creative solution. Using existing area infrastructure, existing historical information that was important and a need for enhanced tourism in an already beautiful setting my thoughts for the
Build the Ship project was born..
Thus, when I sat in front of a small scale model of the Statue of Liberty on a cold February afternoon on Lake Pend Oreille in Sandpoint more detailed inspiration struck.
The video on the home page tells the basic story. This western side of our great country needed something to attract families and especially children for an opportunity to experience some really important history in an entertaining way.
By constructing a replica of a most famous American sailing ship, the USS Constitution, on Lake Pend Oreille and giving this new ship a new humanitarian mission of education and much needed humanitarian service lives could be changed in positive ways.
This should not be a project created by government for the citizenry. It should be a project created by the people themselves to represent, for future generations, that history matters, service to others matters and health education matters. All basics for a quality life.
AND it could be fun to accomplish.
I think this will be an example for the whole world that the people of our great country still care and still seek the best for future generations.
